The present 20th Parliament will fulfill its responsibilities by ensuring the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and holding the institutions accountable, the Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, has said.
The Speaker of the Parliament was speaking on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the adoption of the Green Constitution by the then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
The current Constitution was ratified on August 7, 2008.
Addressing the members of Parliament, the Speaker thanked the members of the Special Assembly for their efforts in drafting the Constitution. He also thanked the Qasim Ibrahim, for presiding over the session.
Abdul Raheem said he would fulfill the duties of the Parliament and hold the institutions accountable.
“I assure the people of Maldives that this Parliament will fulfill its responsibilities in ensuring our rights under the Constitution, and in fulfilling the duties assigned to Parliament and holding institutions accountable,” he said.
The current Constitution was drafted by the Special Assembly in 2004. This Constitution has been in force for 16 years and the most important thing that the people have achieved is the establishment of a separate state.
