Following the government's decision to introduce a taxi fleet, the Drivers' Association has taken up the matter with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs.

Speaking at the meeting of the Economic Committee on Wednesday, Fuvahmulah Medhu MP Ali Fazad said that the Drivers' Association had requested the committee to hold a meeting expressing concern over the government's decision to introduce a taxi fleet.

MDP MP from Kendhoo Constituency, Mauroof Zakir, proposed to summon the Transport Ministry and the Association members for a joint committee meeting to seek more information.

He said that the proposal was made on the basis of previous experience. MP Mauroof said that summoning both parties separately would cause confusion and so it would be better to hold a joint meeting.

Thinadhoo North MP Saudullah Hilmy, however, said that if this was done, it would be detrimental to the issue. As such, he proposed meeting the Drivers Association after getting all necessary information from the Ministry.

Horafushi MP Ali Moosa proposed getting a written response from the Ministry and meeting the Association afterwards.

The proposal was seconded by MP Ahmed Zameer.

The Committee approved MP Ali Moosa's proposal.
