Controller of Immigration Mohamed Shaman Waheed has stated that since Immigration began the crackdown on illegal immigrants, it has been observed that takeaway coffee shops and shops have changed their operating hours.

Speaking on a TV programme, Shaman said that many illegal immigrants are involved in the operation of takeaway coffee shops and outlets that deal with food. He added that a lot of these businesses have closed down since police and immigration launched the joint operation to track down illegal immigrants.

"We have noticed that a lot of places have either closed down or are operating at different times. We have also identified that a lot of these businesses have made changes to the way they operate, ensuring certain measures are taken to run the business behind closed doors. We are looking into these places further and we will take any necessary actions," Shaman said.

He said an intelligence report is being prepared on the information received by the police and immigration authorities and various locations are being searched for illegal immigrants with prior planning. He said the programme would continue in the same manner in the coming days as well.

Shaman added that a lot of market stalls are also being run by illegal immigrants, and that immigration has received letters from locals requesting search of these places.

Shaman also said that efforts are on to deport foreigners who are in the custody of immigration authorities and a large number of foreigners have been deported so far this year.
