The Parliament has proposed a budget of MVR 206 million for the coming year.
Unlike other institutions, the budget of the Parliament must be submitted to the General Committee of the Parliament. It is then approved by the General Committee and included in the state budget when it is submitted to the Parliament for approval.
The budget presented by the Parliamentary Office to the General Committee today included MVR 2.4 million for capital expenditure. The New Policy Initiative includes MVR 5.2 million, including MVR 1 million to upgrade the 10-year-old camera system of the parliamentary office.
The budget also includes MVR 4.5 million for the expenses of the Speaker's official residence, installation of a fire system in the new building and renovation of toilets, terraces and other facilities in the parliament building.
However, next year's budget does not include any salary increases or additional employees.
The parliamentary office said it had proposed a budget of MVR 206 million for next year but the Finance Ministry had given a ceiling of MVR 180 million. However, it is not enough to manage the current expenditure in the parliament.
The budget was presented to the General Committee today but was not approved.
The committee decided to take a decision after consulting the Finance Ministry on the parliamentary budget.
