The Parliament has agendaed the matter of recommending the removal of Central Bank Governor Ali Hashim from office for today.
According to the agenda of today's session, the impeachment of the Governor is the last item on the list as proposed by the committee. The Finance Committee report will be submitted to the Parliament floor during the work..
The Finance Committee has approved a recommendation to the President to remove Ali Hashim as the Central Bank Governor, saying he has not worked to alleviate the country from the economic crisis.
The committee had previously sent a letter to the Speaker of Parliament with their decision. However, the matter was referred back to the committee to allow the governor to respond.
The Finance Committee gave the governor three opportunities to respond but he did not attend the committee meetings. The Governor has informed members that he will respond in writing if they wish to clarify anything further in addition to the Governor’s latest written response to the issue.
The committee members voted on giving the Governor an additional opportunity to respond in writing. The majority of the members decided not to give any further opportunity.
Therefore, Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim moved to recommend to the President to remove Ali Hashim from the post of Governor. He also shared the responses given by the agencies that the governor was not fulfilling his responsibilities before the motion.
The MMA has not complied with the required rules and the decisions have been taken without adequate consultation between the Ministry of Finance and the MMA. The motion was passed by a majority of the committee members.
A general committee meeting was held yesterday to schedule the debate on the committee's report. Eight of the 10 members present voted to set one hour as the debate time on the issue.
