The ceiling of the café at Olympus has collapsed.

A Youth Ministry official told One Online today that the café at the Olympus is quite old, adding that it did not receive any major renovations during the renovations of Olympus during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government.

"While the previous government renovated the place, the presence of termites was noticed," the official said.

He added that the pest control personnel were brought in to spray the whole place with pest spray after termites were discovered in the café well before the renovation of the theater.

The official further noted that the café has been run by different foreigners at different times, adding that the previous owners of the café did not replace the ceilings either. The official also highlighted that with the collapse of the ceiling, foreigners are in charge of cleaning and repairing the place as well.

"It's a ceiling that's been laid long ago. They put gypsum board under the ceiling. Damage from the termites were not visible on the outside before the collapse," the official added.

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his wife Fazna Ahmed reopened the largest cinema in the Maldives on February 4 last year after major renovations.

The Olympus has now replaced the multimedia projector with a digital cinema projector and a 7.1 surround sound system instead of the previous 2.1 sound.
