The International Court of Justice (ICJ), has unanimously decided to accept the Declaration of Intervention submitted by Maldives concerning the 'Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v. Myanmar)'.

ICJ made the decision on 3 July 2024, as it concerns the construction of provisions of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (“Genocide Convention”).

This Order was made by the ICJ despite the objection submitted by Myanmar in relation to the admissibility of the Maldives’ Declaration of Intervention.

The Gambia instituted proceedings against Myanmar in the ICJ on 11th November 2019, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention through acts committed by Myanmar against the Muslim majority Rohingya population.

Attorney General (AG)'s Office said Maldives remains steadfast in its efforts to contribute to the international community’s pursuit of justice for the Muslims of Rohingya and to support the enforcement of the Genocide Convention’s provisions.
