Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has submitted a request to Parliament's Public Accounts Committee to increase the premium on the health insurance packages for judges.
The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday. The insurance package for heads of state, including judges, was last hiked on July 19, 2016.
The current premiums on health insurance offered to judges are:
- Supreme Court Judges - MVR 24,000
- High Court Judges - MVR 14,500
- Criminal Court, Drug Court, Civil Court, Juvenile Court, Family Court Judges – MVR 12,000
- Senior Magistrates and Magistrates of the Constituency - MVR 9,000
The insurance package for judges also provides coverage to the parents of the judges.
JSC requested for Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) to be provided with additional funds to provide full coverage for the remainder of the three-year agreement with Amana Takaful Maldives by increasing the premium of the insurance package for judges and retiring judges.
However, the committee decided to seek the Pay Commission's advice after the members deliberated on the issue.
