Police have said they will launch an investigation into the brutal arrest of a man in Fuvahmulah City after a video of the arrest sparked public criticism.

The video circulating on social media show two officers trying to forcefully detain a man. The video shows one of the officers stepping on the man's neck at one point during the arrest.

Following public criticism of the way police handled the arrest, Police Spokesperson Shifan said that such actions are unacceptable and a formal request has been made to Professional Standards Command and National Integrity Commission to investigate the incident.

Shifan said that Police service does not in any way condone any form of violence.

Police are conducting an operation to identify and arrest drug dealers in Fuvahmulah City, which has led to some clashes.
