Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim has stated that he proposed to reduce the number of MPs in the 19th Parliament, but the supermajority MDP government rejected the Bill.
Speaking during the debate on a resolution that seeks opinion on ending the rising numbers of parliamentarians in each assembly and reducing the number of parliamentarians, Qasim said the number of parliamentarians is increasing each term and such things are not acceptable.
He further added that he also moved in the 19th Parliament to specify numbers. However, the party with the supermajority in the then Parliament (MDP) dropped the Bill without even accepting it, he said.
Qasim said he believed the government had submitted the resolution with a very good intention, adding that it could be debated to appoint a member for every 10,0000 people.
