PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah on Tuesday stated that the 20th Parliament will reduce the number of members of the Parliament,
Falaah made the statement while speaking during the debate on a resolution that seeks opinion on ending the rising numbers of parliamentarians in each assembly and reducing the number of parliamentarians.
Noting that the previous Parliament had a large majority of the then MDP government, Falaah said the previous Parliament came with promises to bring about sincere changes in the country. However, the government and the parliament played dramas, he said.
Falaah highlighted that the parliament had the opportunity to reduce the number of members, reduce the salaries of members and reduce the expenditure of the state and institutions, but it had not done so.
However, the 19th parliament has increased the number of councilors. This added 600 councilors and increased the state budget by MVR 1 billion in salaries, he said.
He also proposed to the 19th Parliament to reduce the number of members of Parliament. If the 19th Parliament had decided to do so, the 20th Parliament would not have had to do so, he said.
However, Falaah said that unlike the 19th parliament, the current 20th parliament will act with sincerity towards the people. The 20th parliament will reduce the number of members, he said.
