State-owned MIFCO will reduce the purchase price of fish further.

The decision to reduce the purchase price of fish comes after several members of the ruling PNC called for a reduction in prices.

The lawmakers made the call during a debate on an emergency motion moved by the opposition MDP in the Parliament demanding immediate release of money to the fishermen in the wake of the ongoing protest by Addu fishermen demanding payment for the fish.

Speaking at a meeting of the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee yesterday, Deputy Speaker of parliament and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim stated that the price of fish would be reduced in the near future.

Nazim said that in a paper sent to the committee by the Finance Ministry regarding the steps taken by the government to reduce the government's expenditure, MIFCO has been informed that it will revise the price at which it is currently buying fish.

Nazim said that the paper proposes to revise the purchase price of fish for MIFCO from July 26.

MIFCO currently buys fish at MVR 25 per kg. The price was fixed during the tenure of president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
