An emergency motion has been moved in the Parliament, calling for the immediate payment of unsettled outstanding payments to the fishermen in Addu by MIFCO.

The matter was moved by Maradhoo MP Ahmed Didi in the Parliament today. Moving the emergency motion, he called on the government to resolve the protests in Addu City over the non-payment of dues to the fishermen.

Despite the presidential promise of Mohammed Muizzu to settle such payments within 48 hours, the government has not paid the money to the fishermen in recent months, he said.

MP Ahmed said the economy of the islands that depend on fishing has come to a halt due to the lack of payment to the fishermen.

“We call on the police and army not to interfere with the protest of the hardworking fishermen in different parts of the country including Addu City and to settle their dues immediately and find a permanent solution to the problem,” he said.

74 out of 75 members of the Parliament voted in favor of the emergency bill.
