Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim and Auditor General Hussain Niyazi have been summoned to the Parliamentary Finance Committee amid their works to assess the financial situation of the country.
The Finance Committee meeting held on Monday was scheduled to be chaired by Finance Minister Mohamed Shafeeq. However, he was unable to attend the meeting citing illness.
Despite his absence, the Minister had submitted all necessary documents required for the meeting to proceed without him. He had also sent a letter requesting to hold the meeting behind closed due to the confidential nature of the documents. Following the letter, media was barred from the meeting which was held in secret.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nazim had however summoned the Auditor General and the Governor to the meeting, noting that a complete analysis could not be made without these two key figures. The Deputy Speaker decided to summon them before the meeting barred the media.
The motion was supported by Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau.
