MIFCO has stated that out of the money owed to fishermen, MVR 52.6 million remains unpaid for fish deliveries made so far.
In response to ongoing protests by fishermen at the Addu Fisheries Complex (AFC) since last Thursday over unpaid dues, MIFCO said on Sunday that the unpaid amount covers one month and 14 days of fish deliveries.
"That's 52.6 million due from May 9th until today. Meaning 1 month and 14 days. This is the total for fish delivered so far," MIFCO stated.
MIFCO said they have cleared the MVR 234 million owed to fishermen at the end of 2023. They also stated that so far this year, they have paid MVR 766 million to fishing boats.
MIFCO noted that they buy fish at a loss of MVR 8 per kilogram, so they rely on government support to pay fishermen for their deliveries.
Therefore, while they are working with the government to secure additional funds, they regret the delay in payments.
