MVR 44 million has been disbursed from state budget to six political parties.

The Political Parties Act stipulates that 1.0 to 0.2 per cent of the state's annual budget should be released to run political parties, and only those parties with 10,000 members should receive from the state budget.

When the budget was passed by the parliament, there were only six political parties that met the criteria – MDP, Jumhooree Party, PPM, PNC, Adhaalath Party and MDA.

According to the law, the state's funds will be distributed among political parties on the basis of the number of members registered as members of the political party.

In this year's budget, MVR 15.1 million has been released to MDP, MVR 5.3 million to Jumhooree Party, MVR 2.5 million to Adhaalath Party, MVR 10.4 million to PPM and MVR 8 million to ruling PNC. MDA has been allocated MVR 2.4 million.

While funds were allocated to six political parties from the state budget, according to the EC's website, the MDA currently has 8,413 members and the Adhaalath Party has 8,628.
