Maldives have amped up their security, following several bomb attacks in neighboring Sri Lanka, which has left about 200 people dead in its wake.
Speaking during a joint press conference by Maldives National Defense Force and Maldives Police Service, Chief of Defense Force Major General Ahmed Samaal said that Sri Lanka had experienced a terrorist attack today and that security had been amped up in the Maldives to stop such attacks.
He also added that he did not believe such an attack might take place in the Maldives.
He noted that Police intelligence was actively working to find out if a terrorist attack was planned in the Maldives and highlighted that in the past several attacks planned at Velana International Airport has been stopped after their hard work in uncovering such plans.
He added that security in the capital city, the main airport and resorts will be closely monitored. Velana International Airport, Gan International Airport and Hanimaadhoo International Airport are among places where security has been amped up.
He further added that meetings and discussions have been held with Maldives Immigration and customs in addition to companies in the tourism industry regarding the security updates. A special framework has been created to report any and all suspicious activities by tourists who are being brought in by such companies.
About 200 people have been pronounced dead with an additional 600 injured in eight different bomb blasts in Sri Lanka today.
