Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihsaan has highlighted the expanding role of Customs in facilitating trade and strengthening border security.

Speaking at the 14th meeting of the South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Customs Sub-Group, Minister Ihsaan said investments in digital connectivity are increasing to support regional trade.

He said infrastructure alone is not enough to ensure effective trade connectivity, noting that inefficient procedures and delays in the movement of goods can prevent countries from fully benefiting from modern ports.

The Minister also stressed the importance of integrating Customs systems, saying digital Customs cannot deliver its full benefits if it operates in isolation.

He said Customs authorities must facilitate legitimate trade while protecting national revenue, preventing illegal trade and ensuring supply-chain security.

Minister Ihsaan said Customs was previously viewed mainly as an institution responsible for revenue collection and border control, but its responsibilities are now much broader.

He highlighted technology as a key tool in achieving these objectives, particularly through digital Customs systems and the National Single Window, which he said could significantly transform the movement of goods across borders.

The meeting is being attended by representatives from the Maldives, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka.
