President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that, had the presidential commissions received the support of the parliament, we would today be closer to justice for those who have been wronged over time.

President Solih’s remarks came during an MDP campaign event held in Dh. Kudahuvadhoo on Wednesday.

He highlighted that while an investigative journalist who unearthed several scandals has been abducted, several other political leaders were jailed who dared to raise voice against the previous government. He added that deaths have increased drastically in the Maldives, and that several citizens had asked to look into this during the elections.

Hence, the President had formed commissions to investigate these murders and corruption. But he stressed that there were several things that could not be done without the support from the parliament.

President Solih also said that if coalition lawmakers didn’t sabotage the bill on granting powers to these commissions, we would now be closer to getting justice for those wrongdoings. He added that the bills are still pending, and that there were several lawmakers who refuse to cooperate. This includes lawmakers who are afraid of being investigated for corruption and theft as well.

He noted that it was important to have lawmakers in the parliament who support such bills, in order to bring perpetrators to justice.
