The Family Protection Authority (FPA) has assembled a registry with names of sex offenders that have been sentenced by the courts.
The registry of names have been assembled by the FPA under the Sexual Offenses Act.
The names include those who have received convictions at court on charges of rape, homosexual acts, prostitution, running brothels, unlawful sexual intercourse and sexual acts under coercion as well as 21 other offenses.
In addition to the names and photos, several identifying physical features, general information and details of the conviction of these sex offenders will also be included in the registry.
The registry will however not be available for public use. The Family Protection Authority has said that the data in the registry can however be released upon special request, and will be utilized for official State business as well. Sex Offenders who are legal juveniles (younger than 18 years of age) will also be excluded from this registry.
Sex offenders who have been released from prison will also be included in the registry. On the other hand, any individual who has been acquitted of sexual offense charges or against who the charges have been dismissed by court proceedings, will see their name wiped from the registry. The death of court-proven perpetrators will also result in their names being removed from the registry.
The Sexual Offenses Act dictates that once a verdict is reached, a copy of a summary report has to be submitted to the FPA regarding any case where a conviction is rendered on charges of sexual offense.
The Act further states that should any convict in prison for charges of sexual offense face a release, the institution of detention has to notify the FPA of the release (in writing), at least 72 hours prior to offering the release to the prisoner.
