The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued caution as the weather in Maldives rises to sweltering hot temperatures.
The agency highlighted some health concerns as temperatures rise, to include fatigue, muscle cramps, headaches and dizziness as well as eye strain. Caution has also been advised for dermatological concerns such as rashes due to the weather these days.
HPA noted that the demographics most impacted by such weather are typically descendants such as children and the elderly as well pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses. As such, the agency has cautioned any persons experiencing similar symptoms should immediately seek medical attention.
Methods to take preventative measures in this weather were informed by the agency, including taking care while breastfeeding children under six months of age. HPA also advised to increase the fluids given to children who are above the age of six months. While the hottest and brightest times of the day have been noted to be from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm in the afternoon, HPA has advised that children should not be taken out at these times as much as possible. The agency also cautioned that young children are protected from the heat and harmful sun rays, as much as possible if they are taken outside during these times.
It has also been advised in general that the consumption of water throughout the day needs to be increased, independent of thirst. The HPA advisory stated that it is important to ensure minimum loss of water from the body as well as to avoid sugary drinks at this time, throughout the day.
The agency included in its advisory, to utilize protection against harmful rays of the sun through the use of umbrellas as well as Sunglasses with UV radiation filters. Additionally, event organizers have also been cautioned during these days of hotter temperatures.
