Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that there are many companies globally selling electricity for merely MVR 2.50. He noted that the challenges in the way of these companies setting up in Maldives is due to lack of a supporting legislation.

President Nasheed said this while speaking at campaign event of MDP Parliamentary candidates for upper-northern Huvadhoo Atoll  last night. He added that the cost of electricity will b cut down to MVR 2.5 per unit. He said that there is absolutely no reason not to generate electricity using solar energy.

President Nasheed said that there is no nation that sells or can sell electricity for MVR 7.50 per unit. He said that the utilization of solar energy as designed under Agenda ‘19 to generate electricity will bring down electricity costs to MVR 2.50 per unit. Agenda ‘19 is the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Parliamentary campaign policy plan for upcoming elections.

He said that he is certain that most people’s electricity bill last month range from MVR 2,000 to MVR 3,000. He said that what is now required is a legal.allocation for the measures by which electricity can be purchased and sold. He noted that there are several companies in the world who wish to carry out sale of electricity in Maldives and added that these companies do not set up businesses here due to lack of legislation.

The former President highlighted certain plans of Agenda ‘19 and noted that loans will be given out for long term construction of homes. He also said that minimum wage as well as greater employment opportunities will be provided under the Parliamentary campaign policy.

President Nasheed further spoke of the Agenda and said that benefits will also be granted to those seeking employment for the duration of their unemployment. He said that a list of employment opportunities opened up for citizens of specific islands will be available, at local council offices under MDP’s Agenda ‘19.

He said that no foreigner will be employed in the 14 resorts surrounding Huvadhoo, whilst a citizen of the atoll, have listed their skills and qualifications with the local council.
