Former President, Mohamed Nasheed, has said that he hopes that no MDP candidate who lost in primaries violate party regulations and run for Parliamentary elections.

Nasheed said this following a Supreme Court ruling today that declared that any candidates who have lost in party Primary elections will be allowed to run in the Parliamentary elections.

President Nasheed took to twitter to convey this message today. He said that he hopes that any candidate that has lost in the MDP primary election does not violate party regulations and run for Parliamentary elections.

He added that he believes that members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will honor politics and national interest.

President Nasheed had tweeted earlier today regarding the Supreme Court ruling. He said that the Supreme Court will not be able to rule a delay in the Parliamentary elections. The former President reiterated that one of the reasons that the courts have lost the confidence of its people is due to attempts to influence the elections. He stressed that additionally, declaring a delay in elections cannot be carried out by the Supreme Court.

He said that elections impact democracy and as such, attempting to influence elections is a misuse of the power of the courts. The former President reiterated that the country has previously experienced courts influencing elections and added that this had caused severe repercussions for the country.

The Chairperson of the Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef had also tweeted in response to the Supreme Court ruling. Shareef said that although candidates that lost in primaries have been given another chance to run in elections, there will be no delay in the date for Parliamentary elections.
