While the upcoming Parliamentary elections are set to be held on 6th April, the campaigns are moving along with fervour. The entire nation is focused on the upcoming elections.

While the Elections Commission has opened up the opportunity to submit candidacy forms, a total of 403 forms have been submitted and 395 forms have been accepted by the Commission. Out of these accepted forms, EC has reported that one of the candidates has retracted a form today, bring the total to 394 candidates. EC has reported that while a case of one of the candidates is still ongoing at the Supreme Court, it is possible that the number rises to 395.

Elections Commission has also announced the list of candidates running for Parliament 2019 today. The Commission has announced that a record breaking number of candidates have applied for the Maafannu - West constituency with 10 candidates.

The constituencies with the second most number of candidates is Laamu Isdhoo constituency and Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaram constituency with nine candidates each.

Looking into the list made public by the Elections Commission today, it should be noted that there are 10 constituencies with two candidates who are running for Parliament. The Elections Commission regulations state that there should be a minimum of two candidates running in each constituency.

These constituencies are:

  • Hoarafushi constituency
  • Baarah constituency
  • Kulhudhuffushi-North constituency
  • Komandoo constituency
  • Kendhikulhudhoo constituency
  • Alifushi constituency
  • Dhaal Meedhoo constituency
  • Mid-Fuvahmulah constituency
  • Hulhudhoo constituency
  • Feydhoo constituency

There is a possibility that the current number of candidates will change until the 27th of this month after which candidate numbers will be designated through a draw.
