Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) have decided to support the MP for North Hithadhoo constituency, Mohamed Aslam for the Speaker of the Parliament.

Vice President of MTD, the MP for Velidhoo constituency, Yamin Rasheed tweeted yesterday to announce the party decision to support MP Aslam. He said that MP Aslam will secure a victory.

With many MPs that belong to the majority party, MDP expressing interest for the position of Speaker at the 19th Sitting of the Parliament, disagreements have surfaced within the party.

Although MTD has declared support for MP Aslam, MTD will not be represented at the next sitting of the parliament.

Close to the vote to elect a Speaker, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed support for MP Hassan Afeef. However, MP Aslam yesterday said that he has secured enough vote to become the new Speaker of Parliament.

MDP set to decide on their candidate for the position of Speaker on 27 May.

The vote for the Speaker will be at the first session of the 19th Sitting of Parliament held on the night of 28 May after the MPs take the oath of office.
