The sentence detaining former President Abdul Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been appealed at the High Court for dismissal. Criminal Court had ordered the detention of former President Yameen until the remainder if his trial on charges of money laundering.

One Online has been informed that President Yameen’s legal team has submitted an appeal, stating that the sentence of his detention was against the law. As such, the team has submitted an appeal to High Court for the dismissal of the sentence.

The detention of President Yameen had been submitted to the Criminal Court by the Prosecutor General’s Office. While the hearing to determine the detention of President Yameen was held yesterday, the State lawyer accused President Yameen of attempting to bribe witnesses.

Maldives Correctional Services had taken the former President to Maafushi Prison after Criminal Court had passed the sentence that President Yameen should remain under detention for the remainder of the trial.
