Former President Abdulla Yameen, who has been serving. a prison sentence has been moved to house arrest.

A tweet by Maldives Correctional services noted that the move to house arrest comes after cases of COVID-19 were detected from the Maafushi Prison among prison officers, where he had been serving his sentence.

His supporters and political party PPM and its coalition partner party PNC have called to move Yameen to house arrest on several occasions, and this time stated that moving the ex-President to house arrest was the safest way right now.

However, they did not reveal the duration of his house arrest.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had previously revealed that he had received letters from President Yameen's spouse, Fathimath Ibrahim regarding President Yameen. He had also highlighted a meeting with senior members of the PPM/PNC coalition regarding the sentence of President Yameen.

President Yameen was found guilty for money laundering in relation to Ga. Vodamulla, one of the islands included in the massive MMPRC scandal, and was sentenced five years to prison.
