Two Brazilian nationals who attempted to smuggle 18 kilograms of drugs in to the Maldives via the airport has been arrested and their remand has been extended.

Brazilian nationals Nauru Nunez D'Souza, 37 and Cristiani Silva, 28 were arrested at Velana International Airport on 2 November 2021, Tuesday. The drugs were found inside the luggage of Cristiani Silva weighs 18.857 kilograms according to authorities.

Yesterday, the Criminal Court extended their remands yesterday. An official from the court said that the remand was extended by seven days for D'Souza and 15 days for Silva. The official also said that Silva has admitted that he had drugs in his luggage while D'Souza has said that she was unaware of the drugs.

They were both remanded as they may pose a threat to the general public.
