Maldives Customs Service has seized MVR 21 million worth of cocaine from two Brazilian nationals that flew to the Maldives on Friday.

A statement issued by the Customs yesterday said that they found the drugs in the luggage of Brazilians, a 21-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, due to their suspicious behaviour.

Customs said that the initial testing of the suspected drugs has tested positive for cocaine and they found 1.760 kilograms on the luggage of the male suspect and 2.503 kilograms in the luggage of the female suspect.

Customs said that the 4.263 kilograms of cocaine seized from the two suspects has a street value of MVR 21,315,000. The custody of both the drugs and the smugglers have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service.

In November 2021, Customs stopped the smuggling of 18 kilograms of cocaine being brought in by two who traveled from Brazil. The drugs had a street value of MVR 94 million. And in the same month, a woman who traveled from Brazil was caught with 16 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of MVR 80 million.

MVR 15 million worth of cocaine was seized from a woman who traveled in from Brazil in August 2021.
