President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has arrived in the Maldives this morning after concluding the trip to New York City, United States, to attend the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The President was accompanied on this trip by First Lady Fazna Ahmed and a high-level Maldivian delegation.
President Solih delivered his address at the UNGA on September 21st. His address was delivered in Dhivehi. Speaking on his decision to address the UNGA in native language, Dhivehi, the President said that the decision was made in response to a questions over the country's ability and role in contributing towards an international dialogue on such a platform.
He noted that in that historic moment, the world witnessed the fact that despite being a small island nation, the Maldives was not so small in the international arena.
In his address to the UNGA, the President had highlighted the Covid-19 Pandemic noting that the world was dependent on the UNGA to recover from such a pandemic. As such, he noted that everyone needs to be on the same page on combining the knowledge, energy, resources and everything else in order to bring the pandemic to an end.
Speaking on the issue of climate change, the President asserted that Maldivians do not have the option to take a backseat in terms of talking about the topic or advocating for it.
In addition to this, his address to the UN also called for the recognition of Palestine as an independent state and also tackled topics such as terrorism.
