Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation begins the launching of a special campaign to promote reducing speeds on the roads named “Meethi Salhi”.
The Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula, spoke on the campaign to One Online today stating that the campaign is aptly titled “Meethi Salhi” (This is Cool) to promote awareness on the importance of reducing speed. She said that many believe that speeding is a “cool” or fun activity. She said that the Ministry is trying to generate the narrative that speeding is not necessarily the act to carry out to be "cool". Nahula reiterated that the “cool” thing would be to reduce speeds and that it is a good thing no matter how you look at it. She also added that wearing helmets is an even cooler alternative.
The Minister of Transport gravely noted the upsurge in recent in the number of traffic collisions saying that the government will take every measure to generate awareness against speeding. Nahula also highlighted that various government entities would be taking part in the official launching of the “Meethi Salhi” campaign.
An official of the Ministry of Transport spoke to One Online today and said that the campaign will be launched on the evening of 1 February 2019 at the Male’ end of Sinamale’ Bridge.
The official informed that the campaign will be launched on the Male’ side of the bridge and and will proceed with reduced speed. The official noted that the main message to be taken here, is that is in not acceptable to drive at high speeds. The campaign will generate awareness on the idea that the safety of the individual who is driving as well as that of other people lies in reducing speed.
The Ministry official informed that the campaign will begin at 4:00 pm on the Male’ side of the bridge and proceed to Hulhumale’ Central Park. There would then be an event at Hulhumale’ where artists will depict the seriousness of the issue to generate awareness. The Minister of Transport Aishath Nahula is also set to speak at this event at Hulhumale’.
The Ministry official also informed that the activities of the campaign will proceed with the support of all sectors of the government and that the event that evening is open to public. The official also reiterated that it is the hope of the Ministry that many will take part in the event.
