Commissioner of Prisons , Ahmed Mohamadfulhu has said that COVID-19 has been controlled at the prison under the Maldives Correctional Service and there are only two active cases currently.
In an interview with One Online, the Commissioner of Prisons said there was a spike in COVID cases in the prison with the Male' Prison and the Hinmafushi Prison getting hit the worst.
He said that cases rose to 60 in the Male' Prison that has a prison population of about 200 inmates. And when many got positive, about about 150 people were identified and quarantined and direct contacts.
The figures have now gone down to two and there are 52 people in quarantine at the moment.
The Commissioner of Prisons said that there is a chance of the number of active cases to rise in regards to the high number of samples being tested.
He said that there are no positive cases in Hinmafushi at this time and there are no positive cases in any prisons aside from the Male' Prison.
When the COVID-19 cases spiked at the prisons, a number of court cases were delayed as well. And with the hearings suspended at the courts as a precaution against COVID, the inmates awaiting trial in Maafannu has had hearings conducted online.
