A series of search operations have been set to be carried out at the prisons and jails under the Maldives Correctional Service to seize contraband being smuggled in.

Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamedfulhu announced on Twitter last night that operations were conducted at Maafushi Prison and the Asseyri Prison at Kaafu Atoll Hinmafushi last week where a large quantity of contraband was seized.

He said that similar operations would be conducted in close successions until a permanent solution can be found to the issue of smuggling.

In the operations last week, about 14 mobile phones and 25 smart phones along with scientific calculators, phone chargers, phone batteries and sharpened blades were found and taken in to the custody of the Correctional Service.

A similar operations in early June 2021 also found a large number of phones and other contraband in Maafushi Prison and Male' Jail.

The Correctional Service has start a project to ensure that the prison cells does not get cellphone service.
