Maldives Police Service has said that the explosives attack last night is being investigated as a terrorist attack targeted on the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed.

In the explosive attack that took place near the former President's residence injured him and three of his bodyguards along with a foreigner in the area.

A statement issued by the police said that the explosion on Neelofaaru Hingun last night is being investigated with top priority with all the investigative and forensic resources available.

And two experts from the Australian Federal Police will be arriving on the country tomorrow to aid in the investigation while two British experts from UNODC is currently providing assistance as well.

Police have appealed to the public to inform them of any suspicious activity in the area prior to the explosion via the Police hotline 970-4000 and assured the confidentiality of the information shared.

The former President is currently in ICU after two surgeries while his three bodyguards have been released from hospital after treatment.
