The Maldives Police Service has warned that legal action will be taken against foreigners who dress inappropriately in public places, in violation of the country’s social norms.

In a statement issued today, police said upholding Maldivian moral and social standards is a shared responsibility of everyone living in the country. Foreign residents have been urged to respect local culture and customs and dress appropriately in public places and on the streets.

Police said some foreign nationals had been observed wearing revealing clothing in public, in breach of accepted social and moral standards. The statement warned that such behaviour could have an adverse impact on public safety and social harmony.

Police said they would take necessary legal action under the law to prevent such incidents.

The police also urged those responsible for foreign workers to ensure they are aware of and comply with local standards. Tourists visiting the Maldives have likewise been asked to dress appropriately in public areas outside designated tourist zones, with legal action to be taken against those who fail to comply.
