Maldives Police Service has introduced SmartDraw software to improve the speed, accuracy and quality of road accident investigations.

The software, introduced by the Traffic Investigation function under Traffic Police and Road Management, enables officers to create detailed accident scene diagrams using pre-designed road layouts, vehicle symbols, traffic signs and other relevant features. It also allows Google Maps and satellite images to be used in preparing diagrams.

Police said the system would modernise accident investigations, improve reporting standards and strengthen evidence documentation.

The introduction comes amid growing concerns over road accidents in Malé. Police have also announced stricter measures against dangerous and excessive-speed driving, including impounding vehicles for 30 days and disposing of those not reclaimed within the specified period in accordance with regulations.

Police also plan to publicise details of repeat offenders and take legal action based on verified photographs and videos shared by the public.
