Speaker of Parliament and JP Leader Qasim Ibrahim has said that consequences of a single party majority is clear through recent history of this country.
Qasim said this at a ceremony held last night signing new members to Jumhooree Party (JP). He said this amidst former President Nasheed's declared confidences that MDP will win the majority in the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
Qasim said that the consequences of any one party winning the majority at Parliament is apparent. He said that the destruction of government institutions are brought about by leaders who overextend their reach into the constitution and law.
Qasim reiterated that it has been clear since 2008, that major amendments are brought to the constitution in the case where a ruling party gains majority at Parliament. He said that while there are claims that the country will not progress without a specific party gaining the majority, it's possible consequences are apparent.
Qasim said that we have to question whether the people will truly benefit or be further harmed by a single party majority at Parliament. He urged the people to learn from past mistakes and said that the new path should be formed from old ones.
Qasim said that there are several promises made at campaign events that are forgotten upon being elected to a post. He stressed however that he is not speaking of the current administration. Qasim also assured that JP would raise their voice against even the current administration, should such behavior be observed.
While the Parliamentary elections are to be held on April 2019 the coalition has yet to agree on dividing the Parliamentary seats. Coalition parties have therefore put forth candidates running for various constituencies based on decisions within the party and not the undecided terms of the coalition.
