Statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism has revealed that India was the top source market for tourist arrivals to Maldives in 2020.

After the Maldives opened it's bordering on July 15 following a closure due to COVID-19, an air travel bubble between Maldives and India was established, allowing several Indian airlines to operate flights to the Maldives.

Statistics show that India recorded 62,905 tourist arrivals to the Maldives in 2020. This makes up a 11.3 percent of the market share.

India was the second biggest source market for tourist arrivals in 2019 with 166,030 tourist arrivals that year. The Tourist Ministry had said that the number had been increasing each year.

In contrast, China was the top source market in 2019 with 284,029 tourist arrivals during 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese tourists had not traveled to the Maldives during 2020. Up until border closure, China recorded 34,245 tourist arrivals easily landing them the sixth spot on the top source markets list.

Russia marked the second biggest source market in 2020 with 61,388 tourist arrivals. They held a market share of 11.1 percent. United Kingdom was the third with 54,716 arrivals.
