Discussions have been held to shorten the local quarantine period to 10 days from the 14 days that is currently mandated due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
"One" has learned that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih held discussions regarding this last night with health experts. However, it remains unclear as to when the change will be effective.
Speaking to One Online, an official for the Health Protection Agency (HPA) noted that the Director General of Public Health, Maimoon Aboo Bakuru is yet to make any such decision and that the public will be informed with a statement if a decision is made.
A senior official at the President's Office revealed that discussions on the matter are still ongoing and added that an official decision will be made tonight.
However, the President of the Guesthouse Association of Maldives, Abdulla Nasheed tweeted today thanking President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom for reducing the quarantine period.
Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC) has previously said that 14 days was the right amount for quarantine to ensure that the virus did not spread. Dr. Nazla from the HEOC also asserted that if the quarantine period is cut short, it increases the risk of the virus spreading.
