Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem has said that the highest number of cases in the Maldivian Criminal Justice System is drug-related crimes and currently cases are being processing to prosecute 2,661 people.

Speaking at the Parliament’s Budget Committee currently reviewing the Annual State Budget for the year 2021, PG Shameem said that a pattern of a network of drug trade is emerging with where its coming and where its going.

He said that the Maldives Police Service is working hard on it.

PG Shameem said that drug cases are 59 percent of the Maldivian Criminal Justice System and 59 percent of the cases prosecuted this year are drug-related crimes. However, by adding the crimes of theft and mugging to sustain drug habits, that percentage would rise to 75.

He further said that the National Drug Control Council (NDCC) is continuing their work and more results will be developed when the plans are established by the NDCC.
