Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem has said that DNA evidence of the suspects Ahmed Thahumeen and Ali Haisham were found on then improvised explosive device (IED) that was detonated on the attack against the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed.

PG Shameem made the statement at the press conference held today at the Prosecutor General's Office (PG Office) to update the media on the latest developments regarding the bombing on 6 May 2021.

He said that their DNA was found on the IED because they were involved in preparing the explosive. And there is no other reason that their DNA would found on the device. The PG said that enough evidence has been gathered to prove their involvement.

Maldives Police Service has previously said that the IED on the motorcycle used in the attempted assassination of the Speaker of the Parliament was planted on a motorcycle near a housing building in Hulhumale'.

Police said that there were 17 people in the vicinity of the IED when it was detonated. And the bearing balls used on the device injured some members of the public along with the Speaker of the Parliament and his bodyguard.
