Acting Health Minister and the Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam, has said that the Maldives have seen a second wave of COVID-19 and the numbers are now declining.

He made the remark responding to a question from the MP for Ihavandhoo constituency, Mohamed Shifaau at the ongoing parliament sitting today.

Minister Aslam said that the number of efforts are being made to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases in the country. And so, the standards being followed in reducing cases are also up to international levels.

He said that when the initial Male’ Area Lockdown was lifted in June; the average number of daily cases were at 40. However, the second wave of COVID increased the number of daily cases significantly.

Aslam said that it would take about 90 days to bring down the daily average to that of when the lockdown was initially lifted. But that can only happen if a third wave is prevented.
