National airline of India, Air India, has resumed their flight operations in the Maldives.

The airline’s agent in the Maldives, Villa Travels, said that the flight operation began yesterday and would have two flights a week between Male’ and Trivandrum on Tuesdays and Fridays.

With Air India resuming flights, India has also set to create a “Travel Bubble” between India and the Maldives. This is the first of its kind to be established in the South East Asia region since COVID-19.

The Maldivian Foreign Ministry has previously said that the establishment of a Bubble would benefit the Maldivians who travel to India for medical treatment. And with a special circumstances allow patients to travel for treatments not available in the Maldives, a Travel Bubble would set a schedule for flights beforehand.

With the Maldives re-opening its borders on 15 July 2020, international travel has been resumed. And India is the market of the second highest number of tourists per nation to visit the Maldives.
