Court has ordered a man accused of child rape while in a trustworthy position, to be detained in custody until the end of the trial.

Maldives Police Service said that the accused is 32-year-old Ibrahim Nadheem Salih from Gaafu Alifu Dhevvadhoo.

The case against him was reported to the police on 23 July 2020 and he was arrested on 25 July for sexual abuse of a child under the age of 18. When he was taken to the remand hearing at the Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo Magistrate Court, police said that the court initially remanded him by 15 days.

The court decided to detain him until the end of the trial when the suspect taken to his second remand hearing on Sunday. The decision was made by the court under Article 12/2016 after reviewing the request by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Police said that the court made the ruling as he is danger to society and children and could influence witness testimony.

The police further said that they are working to complete the investigate and send the case for prosecution.
