Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has started investigating the rape of a foreign woman that took place on board a safari yacht at the Hulhumale’ lagoon.

Media Officer of HRCM, Ahmed Haheem has confirmed this to One Online saying that the investigation has started but due to the nature of the case, no details can be offered at this time.

Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service, moments ago, has said that they have not yet been summoned to the HRCM for their investigation. At the same time, police would support the efforts of the Independent Institutes to hold the police accountable.

Two 39-year-old local men were arrested following the report of the crime in the early hours of Friday morning. However, the suspects were released yesterday, according to the police, due to insufficient evidence.

A number of people have raised voices calling to release the names of the suspects.
