The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has begun investigating a complaint filed by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) over the lack of basic services for residents of H.Dh. Hirimaradhoo.

The MDP alleged that the Hirimaradhoo Council was dissolved in violation of decentralisation laws, depriving residents of rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Although administrative responsibilities were transferred to the Hanimaadhoo Council, the MDP said the arrangements have not been functioning adequately.

HRCM said it has registered the complaint and begun an investigation.

Hirimaradhoo is the least populated island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, with 293 residents, according to the latest census figures. The population comprises 157 men and 136 women.

The Government has decided to build dedicated housing units in Hanimaadhoo for Hirimaradhoo residents to facilitate their relocation. However, construction has yet to begin.

Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib said in Parliament last month that the Hanimaadhoo Council had created difficulties and was not cooperating with the project. He said separate housing projects would need to be implemented for Hirimaradhoo residents and Hanimaadhoo’s general housing needs.
