President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that the Maldives will be reopening its borders for tourism beginning July 15th, after which resorts will also be permitted to open.
Speaking during a press conference at the President's Office today, President Solih revealed that the country will reopen its borders for tourism on July 15th, with which resorts will once again be permitted to reopen as well.
He further added that Guesthouses will be allowed to reopen in August, and noted that one of the biggest satisfactions during this time is knowing that one of the biggest tourist markets, Germany has already declared Maldives safe to travel to.
President Solih highlighted that while the country reopens for tourism, necessary establishments for COVID-19 testing and treatment are in place.
Maldives Airport Company Limited (MACL) also noted that they are ready to cater for the tourists ahead of the reopening.
The government stated that with tourism resuming in July, total tourist arrivals for the year could be brought as high as 980,000. About 500,000 to 600,000 tourists are expected to arrive within the remainder of the year.
Finance Ministry previously stated that the 50% decline in tourism this year will result in the estimated state revenue dropping to MVR 15 billion from the MVR 30 billion that was projected earlier.
