Maldives Police Service has said that among the people who faced fines for violation the Male’ Area lock down amid the COVID-19 pandemic, most were fined once or twice but one person was fined 28 times.

Talking to Raajje TV on the challenges and the role of the police during the lock down, Superintendent of Police, Hussain Sameer said that there were people who were fined and arrested repeatedly during the lock down.

He said that it was noted that people who were fined repeatedly included those that did not have a home to go and so were on the streets and most of them were sleeping near the Local Market area and the mosques before. They were later provided with housing and food through several institutes.

Superintendent Sameer said that a few people were fined more than twice and so a total of 8378 people were fined in Male’ City during the lock down , 883 in Hulhumale’ and 150 people from VIlimale’.

Meanwhile, 576 people in Male’ City were arrested with 47 people from Hulhumale’ and three people from Vilimale’. Police said that the people who were arrested for violating the lock down will be prosecuted.
