Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that they have already discussed to reopen Maldivian borders on July 16, to kick start the economy in a new normal post-COVID-19.
During the parliament session today, Speaker Nasheed noted that even though an exact date has not been set as of yet discussions have already been held to reopen borders on July 16.
A motion filed by MP Ahmed Rasheed called upon the government to declare COVID-19 Free Zones and to reopen those zones for economic activity. It added that since 85% of the Maldivian economy is based upon the Hospitality industry, COVID-19 Free Zones need to be declared around areas with an international airport and be reopened in a way that would allow these airports to cater for private jets as well.
It further added to reopen Addu International Airport along with Hanimaadhoo International Airport and to promote Huvadhoo as a safe tourism spot. It also asked to reopen three areas for economic activity.
Lawmakers noted that increasing economic activity in sectors aside the hospitality industry is extremely essentially when reopening the country.
