Maldives Police Service has dispersed a small crowd that gathered in front of the parliament organized by Navaanavai. Journalists of One Online at the scene reports that the crowd consists of about ten people.
Navaanavai has previously told One Online that the purpose of the protest is to hold the parliament accountable during this time of COVID-19 where the people are struggling. They have accused the parliament of wasting time and indulging themselves during this challenging time for the public.
When the rally began today, participants were in front of the main gate of the parliament. While police officers were patrolling the area, they did not close any roads but have advised against holding a rally during this time.
The people gathered at the area were then ordered to go back as far as Hotel Jen but the participants refused to comply according to One Online journalists at the scene. And so, police officers had now forced the protesters back with some of them being carried out of the area.
Since then, the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed had come out to the parliament grounds to observe the situation. And the MP for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir, arrived at the parliament through the rally.
The participants of the rally are wielding signs expressing their thoughts. While the rally was initially called to hold the parliament responsible, most of the signs in the crowd aims at the government in general.
The rally at the parliament has now been concluded and the participants are set to resume their protest at 1:30 p.m.
